Machinima

Beginning in the late 1990s, the rapidly increasing popularity and graphic sophistication of computer games created a spin-off industry of open-source and commercial game-creation engines. With the game engine, savvy gamers could make their own monsters, levels and even entire games in the style of the favorite shooter, such as half life and unreal tournament.
The game engines themselves also when through a rapid evolution to make them more user-friendly for non-programmers; their simplifeid production interfaces tapped into the intricate underlying code of the game without requiring a great deal of technical know-how.
it did not take long for 3D animators, many of whom are also devoted gamers, to realise that game engines also could be used to create animation cinema
This new animation process, dubbed Machinima by its practitioners, employed existing game-creation tools but substituted a predetermined linear story line for a game's typical interactivity and branching action.
The technological adavantages of Machinima are also its artistic dangers. Over-dependence on built-in game scenarios makes for too many Machinima dramas in which moody characters roam dark corridors. But high- quality work is not hard to find for example:

Michael Sormann

Austrian asrtist and animator Michael Sormann has been enticing the 3D world for several years with images of his ongoing opus, Theme Planet. His fertile design imagination, endless attention to detail, and the huge scope of what he is creating: an entire detailed and populated world, sets his work apart from other artists.
Theme park takes place in a planet sized theme park floating in space. The hero, a pig, is satisfied at first with his boring life as a repair engineer alongside his assistant, an elephant. But extraordinary events cause the pig to seek answers to what is really going on inside the huge planetary structure.

Patrick Beaulieu

Patrick Beaulieu is an Canadian animator and character designer, who is popular for his design of freaky birds, nervous rodents, inadequate bears, and uncertain, indeterminate fuzzy critters of no obvious species. His angst-ridden characters panic at the sound of a snore, mistaking it for the growl of a lion, or they worry anxiously about their obvoius inability to be scary themselves.

Realism vs. Stylization

The decision to put stylization over realism is mainly an aesthetic choice- the nature of comics and cartoons is to be economical, stereotyped renderings of reality. But it has also been a choice driven by considerations of time and money.
3D artists can make his or her cartoon creatioms look absolutely real, at least in the sense that they will project certain visual surface cues we expect from real objects.

For 3D toon animations, realism at any level is hardly a requirement.

It Screams: COLOUR 'n' LIGHT

This wasnt the best image that screamed colour and light but i liked the contrast in it.

Project 2: Navigating Your Identity

The aim for this project is to explore how a interactive design can be used to reflect your self and professional identity.
I will be required to design and create an online box/showcase that containts five different objects that tells a story about who I am; one of the objects should include the avatar that i created in project one of the identities project.

Idea 1
one object i was considering putting in the box was a photograph bok that i was going to animate using still images and the pages flicking over to the next image. this will also incooperate stop motion and at the same time it is telling a story. of what is in the images

Idea 2
A 3D avatar, a virtual self representation of myself

Idea 3
Wel i liketo keep fit and work out a lot, prehaps adding in something to symbolism exercise

3D Studio max

In the past I have used Alias Maya and i was happy with the design and layout of the interface, however now I am starting to learn 3D Studio Max.

One tutorial i have been looking at is...
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials_3/modelling_duck/modeling_duck01.asp

I have already designed a human face in Alias Maya for a college project which was talking about a social issue the time the model and animation was created.

This next video is a piece that was recently created at 3D Studio Max this was the first time i had used this software, and although there are similar feature to Alias Maya the interface design is different and in my personal opinion more complex then Maya

I also found a website that is just a mass storage site for blueprints, you see what i wanted to create in a 3D software was a model of a car or a motorbike. so i was researching on the net for any site that had car and motorbike blueprints and this is one of the best sites i found.

Identities Assignment

Our new project for 2008 is called Identities, this project will be split into 2 tasks...

- The Avatar (a second self).

The idea is to explore a virtual avatar, through a application such as Second Life and then to create our own using 3D studio max.

- Navigating Identity

Looking at Joseph Cornell, we will create a box containing things we believe to show our identity. The difference is ours will be online using flash rather than a palpable object. Our box will also contain our avatar from the previous task.

In this project we will be exploring our own professional identity through independent multimedia practise. I will again be using flash so it is important I learn more advanced tools in action script. When using flash it will important to test usability and learn inter relationships in multimedia techniques.

The Street Sketcher - Banksy

I was having a look in waterstones when i came accrossed a book called street sketching by a artist called banksy. he would best be described as a graffiti artist. but has world reconition for his works around london

http://www.banksy.co.uk/

Banksy is a well-known pseudo-anonymous English graffiti artist. He is believed to be a native of Yate, Greater Bristol and born in 1974, but there is substantial public uncertainty about his identity and personal and biographical details. According to Tristan Manco, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier engineer, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s." His artworks are often-satirical pieces of art that encompass topics such as politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti with a distinctive stencilling technique, has appeared in London and in cities around the world

A Second Life

OK for this assignment we have to create a secondary life. so i through i better start doing some research. firth thing that came to mind with the terms secondary life was the film the matrix.
A second life can be precieved as a alternative life, some people find themselves that virtual world can be better then the real world. that is why i mentioned the matrix, a virtual world pulled over the real world to hide the truth from people, film directors can be described as having a second life in their films, because a film can be scifi or fantasy, something that aint real but it is what the director precieves as a alternative world, wheather it be a futuristic world with spaceships and life on numberious other planets, or a film with ancient creature that roam the earth.

We were asked to look at a few virtual worlds and keep a diary of what goes on. I started looking at second life and I have another post with my diary entries about what i discovered.
the second virtual world i looked at was a game called runescape.
Runescape is described by wikipedia as simple interface, and its accessibility on most web browsers. RuneScape takes place in the fantasy-themed realm of Gielinor, which is divided into several different kingdoms, regions, and areas. Players can travel throughout the Gielinor on foot, by using magical teleportation spells and devices, or mechanical means of transportation. Each region offers different types of monsters, materials, and quests to challenge players.

AV: Audio/Video

For next year i wanted to go into the field of AV. so i through i better start looking at the different parts of av and different directors.so here goes...

A/v(Audio/Video) is described as:(Audio/Video) Refers to equipment and applications that deal with sound and sight. The A/V world includes microphones, tape recorders, audio mixers, still and video cameras, film projectors, slide projectors, VCRs, CD and DVD players/recorders, amplifiers and speakers. The term originally meant "audio/visual."

"A director is a person who directs the making of a film. A film director visualizes the script, controlling a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of their vision."

The first director i want to talk about is a director i grew up knowing and watching his films, Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg is an Smerican film director and producer, who is the highest grossing film maker of all time, Premiere listed him as the most powerful and influential figure in the motion picture industry.
Spielberg's films have touched many themes and genres. Three of his most famous films to me are Jaws, E.T, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park.

Then theres Tim Burton who started of his career producing a 6 minute stop motion movie called 'Vincent'.

MadPolygons

this is my college tutors website, its currently under development, but its a flash interface site that incooperates Alias Maya into the design and, i through that it would be a great example of a multimedia site because i know the developer of this site personally.

Another piece of in-progress work

In Progress Works

I have always been fasinated with the media surrounding bands or nightclubs, for example flyers, banners, posters, and other merchandice.
after going to the gate crashers night club in nottingham, i decided to take one of the photographs of my companions and create my own flyer for gate crashers. here i have just broken down the different stages of what happened until I achieved the final product.

wel as you always do we start of opening a photshop document, i seem to always use rather A4 or A3 size on landscape, because this gives you a lot of space to try stuff out and to do resizing.
this piece will be made up of quite a few layers becuase it allows me to sigle out one problem and edit jus that bit.

first i started by adding a new layer and filling it in black

i then added a new layer with a picture of my friend out clubbin and put a cut out effect on it, to make the picture more abstract, i then brang the opicaty down becuase i dont want to flyer to be too bold and vibrant

i then added a cloud effect with a red - white glow gradient effect

this cloud was where the font on some of the writting was going to go

i then addede some minor information that was to be on the flyer, the date adn time and prices

the design was mainly black with a slight image, the only colour for the moment was on the cloud,so i added a slight red to clear gradient to add a bit more colour.

and the final piece that needed to be added the nightclub logo.

some works done in photoshop

i through i better put some of me own work up also i was told today that i had to by me tutor.. however i ain't going to do any writing about these just yet because I'm to ill to concentrate.

While i was at collegei started designing tshirt ideas, that i wanted to create. you could buy transfer paper cheap in bulk, and i found a website that sold cheap polo shirts. it cost about 3 pound to get a shirt and put a design on it, and people were willing to pay between 10 and 15 pound for one tshirt becuase of the price that personal designs cost in the shops. i found that it didnt just have to be tshirts that could be used. hoodies and tracksuit bottoms, hats scarfs, almost and piece of clothign or accesery could be used.

this was just a piece that messed about with colour and imagery

in this piece i wanted to add some of my own art work into the design

this was a piece that i created because i wanted to see if people would believe that the cut was real, and there were some people that believed it was. and others who knew me a bit better and knew i was good at photoshop, asked if it was a piece of work i had created

i was playing around with the effects in photoshop, in this picture i keep the eyes of the two people normal and the rest of the image had a cut out effect.

I spent a lot of chrismas and new years in nottingham working, and on one of the night when i was bored i decided to design a nightclub flyer

i emposed my name and a design onto a side of a bus, so that the image looked like it was taken of a bus and my name was on the board at the side

this was another one of my tshirt designs, i had a reverse colour version that i actually made, btu my previous girlfriend has still got it, and i want it back

its hard to see the design but i love this one becuase it a basic skyline
